Massage Contra-Indications – Do's and Don'ts

Marie Grace Knudsen • March 19, 2022

There is nothing more heavenly than good massage therapy. Indeed, the best way to pamper oneself after an exhausting day is to book a massage appointment. Laying on that table makes all your tiredness vanish into thin air.

However, it is important to book a licensed masseuse who has a good reputation. You put your complete trust in someone and hand them over your body, so it better be someone who knows what they are doing.

If the masseuse is not qualified enough, you might end up with even stiffer and more sore muscles instead of feeling calm and peaceful. But that is not all that you have to look out for. We all are in a pamper me from head to toe mood on some days so, to get the most out of your massage therapy, there is a list of things that you should do and another list of things that you should avoid.

In this article, we will be addressing all those things to make sure your ultimate form of self-care does not turn into self-torment for you.

The Dos of Body Massage

How are you supposed to rejuvenate yourself if you do not extract the most out of this super relaxing therapy?

Let the masseuse work their magic but to make the magic work, here are some things that you should always do during and after a body massage:

·      Drink Plenty of Water

After a session of massage therapy, your body is quite dehydrated. Drinking a couple of glasses of water right after the massage will nourish it and make you feel more relaxed and refreshed.

Apart from that, it is also important to excrete the harmful toxins released by your body during the massage. Drinking lots of water will speed up this process by increasing your kidney function.

·      Take Magnesium Supplements

By the title, it might sound ridiculous but once you read the explanation of it, it will make a lot of sense. It is normal to feel muscle soreness after a body massage but this soreness may not leave you for a few days. Taking magnesium will help you get rid of it faster by eliminating the pain.

·      Inform Your Therapist About Any Pain or Discomfort

Ignoring any signs of pain or discomfort during a massage session is a big mistake often made by people who don’t get massages frequently. Inform your therapist if you are experiencing any discomfort to prevent any possible muscle injury.

 The Don’ts of Body Massage

·      Don’t Consume Caffeine

Since caffeine is dehydrating, you should avoid it for at least 12 hours after your massage. As the body is already dehydrated after a massage session, you should be nourishing it with hydrating fluids instead of further drying it out.

·      Don’t Workout

As your muscles are already sore after the massage, a heavy workout session will only make them more inflamed. This will add to your pain and it might last longer than it should have.
